I don’t know about you guys, but whenever I leave the house I always bring food with me! If I am leaving for a long day of classes, I might bring a meal or two. Even if I am only leaving for a few hours, I still bring an emergency snack just in case I need a little extra oomph to get me through an overwhelming organic chemistry lecture, lengthy lab, or nutrition lecture.
I’ve been a college student for three years now, so let’s just say I’m the master lunch packer. Below are a few of my favorite products that make my meal prepping and lunch packing that much easier!
So I am super picky when it comes to school bags, lunch boxes, etc. because I don’t want to waste my hard-earned money on something that I don’t absolutely love. One day I was scrolling through Instagram and I stumbled upon Fitmark bags. Seriously – I fell in love.
This is not just a lunch box, this is a meal prepping bag! I kid you not, it is literally called a “meal prep bag.” It is big enough to carry two meals, a drink or two, dry snacks, and silverware. The bag’s design is so thoughtful that even though the bag can fit SO much food, it doesn’t end up being too big. It’s the perfect size and it rests your arm in the perfect position. P.S. I know I sound crazy. It comes with the bag, two containers, a water bottle, and custom fit ice packs.
I love this product so much that I reached out and got you all a 15% off savings with the code: JILL15
I use the planet box for when I am only going to be out of the house for a couple of hours and want to bring a substantial snack. The planet box is significantly smaller than the containers in the Fitmark lunch box, but it is perfect for some fruit and trail mix or a small salad with veggies! It has two compartments:
It has two compartments: 1 cup and 2 cups plus a small container that you can use for a sauce, dressing, hummus, or nut butter! It comes with a small lunch box and customizable magnets. I don’t use the magnets, but they work great if you have children – or if you just want to make your container more festive!
I drink 3-4 liters of water every day. I start my morning off with 1 liter, then have another 1-2 during the day (depending on my workout and level of activity), and another 1 before I go to bed. I definitely believe that hydration is key when it comes to physical and mental performance! Having a 32 oz water bottle with me all day really helps me make sure that I am drinking enough. It’s a quick and easy way to keep track of my water intake.
I had a night class last semester that ended at 9:15. I am NOT a night owl. All I wanted was a comforting, warm dinner and it drove me nuts that I couldn’t be home to have a nice bowl of soup in the middle of a cold semester. For whatever reason it took me two years to realize that I could bring hot food to campus with me! I finally bought a thermos and my life changed. Now don’t get me wrong, I still hated my night class, but this thermos made it bearable. It kept my minestrone hot all day so that I could still have a comforting dinner when I needed comfort the most.
Nuttzo makes these to-go nut butter packs that are the perfect size! I know you’ve all seen travel packs of nut butter, but they are usually 2 tbsp. and that’s sometimes a little too much nut butter for a single use. I try to stick to a single tbsp. per serving (that way I can have multiple servings of nut butter a day – ha!) so these packets are perfect. They come in at just over a tbsp. (19g) which is perfect when you need to satisfy your nut butter needs on the go.
Another reason this nut butter is amazing is that it includes a variety of nuts instead of just one or two varieties. More variety = more nutrition. Nuts are super nutrient dense and this nut butter is a great way to squeeze in (hehe, I can be punny sometimes) some extra nutrients on a busy day!
These are my favorite bars on the market! At a quick glance, I bet you can guess why. At 12g of fiber/bar, they pack a fiber-full punch. Fiber D’Lish bars have a good blend of soluble and insoluble fiber, are low in calories (130 calories/bar), and are low in sugar (10g) when compared to other bars on the market. Most people don’t get enough fiber during the day. And let’s be honest, stress can really back you up sometimes and the high fiber content can really keep you moving! These bars are great to keep in your school bag for emergencies!
Just beware, the blondie flavor is NOT vegan! The rest of them are though! My favorite two flavors are the blueberry cobbler and cinnamon raisin bars!
Before becoming a commuter at a local university, I lived on campus 300 miles away from home in the middle of a town without vegan options. These soups were a lifesaver! I would buy a ton at home and bring them back to school with me. I honestly had 5-7 soup cups/week. This brand is phenomenal because their soups are vegan and there are a ton of low-sodium options. There is a ton of variety: split pea, minestrone, black bean, tortilla, spring onion, etc. etc. etc. I like to keep these in my car so that I have a quick meal if I get stuck on campus.
Oatmeal on-the-go is another great option for a portable meal! If I have an early morning exam, I like to bring these with me so that I can have a satisfying, healthy breakfast while I get an extra hour of studying in. These are super convenient because all you need is hot water and a spoon! These oatmeal cups are also great if you need a little afternoon pick-me-up in the form of carbs!
